36 years of recovery 30 years as a therapist. I went from FTW to FTW. Both were protective. One to protect my heroin coke booze. The next to protect my desire to live. I think I noticed that people actually cared but even after all the changes many still view me as my drug self. Odd but not my problem at all.
Thank you for this article, Mia. Can you talk sometime specifically about those early days of quitting and your relationship with your husband? How/if it affected the way you spent time together, etc.
This absolutely resonates. As a 6 months and handful of days sober person, I’m becoming aware of where I choose to use my energy. Your description of “energy leaks” are spot on: those small drains add up and I will now be more conscious of when they happen and plugging them when needed!
Its definitely a daily check-in with ourselves and tuning in to how we feel in every situation as well as taking responsibility for it when it does happen....that's the real work :) xx M
Thank you for sharing! I’m over 7 months in now and trying to stop myself from being the one who draws more attention to the fact that I’m not drinking. It really hasn’t been a big deal at all to others in my life and that’s surprising but also... not really.
I love the self observation Sarah. It didn’t take long for me to realize the same. After the initial conversations about it, it usually was a non-issue. And it was never as big of a deal as I thought it would be...one way or the other ;)
