I've been in menopause for six years now and I guess I just figured HRT wasn't an option for me anymore but lately I've been feeling horrible. I have a doctor's appointment next week and this is the first thing I'm bringing up.
Your article found me at exactly the right moment. I am 47, five years sober, and I just started HRT nine days ago. It's been a wobbly start for sure, but I am hopeful that things will even out in the weeks to come.
I was super anti-HRT for like a year. I was bound and determined to "do it" the natural way and tried to solve my symptoms with teas, tinctures, and supplements.
It just wasn't enough. Then I had a rather revealing revelation - I am in a hormone deficit. No amount of dandelion tea or magnesium or protein is going to change the fact that I am losing / no longer producing estrogen and progesterone.
I am thinking of HRT as a replenishment and rebalancing protocol.
Thanks for sharing all of the podcast goodies. I can't wait to listen. 💜
Oh Crystal I am so happy for you. I, too, tried all the "natural" first as well. And they worked until they didn't work. I will never forget how those all-day "warm hugs," as I called them, slowly became more consistent, intense, and bothersome. And within 48 hours of slapping on my first estrogen patch, they stopped abruptly. And slowly all the other symptoms started to subside. Granted, there is no miracle cure and nothing that will make us feel 18 again, but I am so grateful I gave it a go. Life-changing for real! XX
Same story here, and so grateful to have found both. Especially sobriety before I was hit by the perimenopause dumpster fire. Joyful to see you on Substack! xx
I feel pretty passionate about this topic. I didn't get sober just to experience hangover symptoms for the next ten years! I had to do so much self education and also lean into self trust to decide what is right for me. Thanks for opening up the dialogue.
SAME! I am so thankful to have quit drinking prior to going through this transition. I know for a fact I would have used alcohol so much to "help" deal with the uncontrollable anxiety, rage, and body pain. Education and self-trust are everything - no matter what a woman chooses to do for herself. Thank you for your comment :)
Thank you for sharing. I’ve been following these medical experts for a while. Thanks to them giving me evidence-based info and the courage to advocate for myself,
I will be starting HRT soon. I am 64.
I started asking for HRT when I was 58, not yet 10 years past menopause, and it was a hard no from my GP, Obgyn and an Obgyn from Menopause Society.
I could not love this comment more. It's exactly why we need these experts and people sharing ALL of the information. And there is nothing more empowering than being your own advocate!

If you haven't already I think you will very much appreciate the work Dr. Jen Gunter is doing over at The Vajenda (https://vajenda.substack.com/)!
Thank you!
HRT (and sobriety) changed my life. Felt so incredibly horrible. Thank you for sharing this.

I am so happy I could cry. Wish me luck!
